Ethiopia, through the Ethiopia Investment Commission (EIC) is a beneficiary of a technical assistance project promoting and facilitating finance and investment in the energy transition. As "universal owners" with large investments in companies across a huge range of sectors and markets, sovereign and public investors are in a unique position to drive sustainability along the investment chain and channel more capital into key sectors that can contribute to the energy transition and long-term sustainable development, in particular in developing countries. This event, jointly organized by UNCTAD and the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), will bring together international organizations, regulators, standard setters, senior executives of investment institutions, and other stakeholders to take stock of the challenges and opportunities created by sustainable finance regulations. The conference will bring together market leaders from the fund and asset management industry, institutional investors, stock exchanges, and other stakeholders to discuss ways to grow sustainable finance from a "market niche" to a "market norm," which can drive sustainable and inclusive development in both developed and developing countries and contribute to the attainment of the SGGs. Participants will focus in particular on options for the industry to boost finance in support of climate change mitigation, especially in developing countries, providing insights and ideas that can feed into discussions at COP28, which will take place a month later in the UAE. In the context of the EU-UNCTAD Joint Programme for Angola: Train for Trade II and with funding support provided by the European Union, UNCTAD and the Fundo Soberano de Angola (FSDEA), the sovereign wealth fund of Angola, will organize a high-level meeting to discuss opportunities, strategies and practical measures to mobilize institutional investment for infrastructure development in Angola and maximize its contribution to sustainable and inclusive development in the country. The Commission will bring together international institutional investors, stock exchange executives, regulators and policymakers to discuss the current trends, challenges and opportunities for sustainable investment, and policy measures that can be taken by developing economies to leverage capital markets for sustainable development in the post-pandemic era. In doing so, the Commission specifically addresses the UN General Assembly resolution on “Promoting investment for sustainable development” (A/RES/74.199 and A/RES/75/207) and its request for UNCTAD to provide “concrete recommendations for the advancement of investment for the implementation of the 2030 Agenda”.
