This paper is the product of a UN Environment Program Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) Reflective Cycle which investigated how a holistic and more locally driven approach to the SDGs (as per UNEP FI's Holistic Impact approach ) could unlock private sector solutions and private finance for climate change and other SDG-related topics in the Middle Eastern and North African region. This process, which was conducted in Egypt and Morocco, combined desk-top research with a series of dialogues with experts and decision-makers from public and private entities from both countries.
This research was carried out with support from the “SDG Climate Facility Project”, led by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in partnership with the League of Arab States, the Arab Water Council, UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR), UN-Habitat, World Food Program (WFP), and UNEP FI. It has benefited from the invaluable financial contribution by the Swedish Government through the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA).
